RIFT goes free-to-play
Trion Worlds announced today that RIFT, its unapologetic World-of-Warcraft rip-off, will toss its hat into the free-to-play ring.
“On June 12 with the release of Update 2.3: Empyreal Assault, RIFT will be free to play. Every dungeon, every raid, every warfront, every level – the whole world will be open to players new and old with no barriers to entry. For complete details, visit the Free-to-Play page and FAQ, read Daglar’s Producer’s letter, and tune in to our free-to-play live streams May 17 and May 31!”
Free-to-play is a formula that’s revitalized a few worn out MMOs. Will it work for Rift? Well, if putting about a month’s worth of free-to-play, cash-store money into Trion World’s coffers is working, then yes. Why a month? Because a month is about how long it will take everyone to burn through RIFT’s content.
