Guild Wars 2: What’s a gem worth?
Guild Wars 2 is essentially a free-to-play (F2P) MMO: You buy the game and you never have to pay a subscription fee. You can play GW2 as long as you want without ever having to pay another dime for the game (Though, you’ll probably have to pony-up some cash for expansions when they start arriving.).
One of the ways ArenaNet and NCSoft plan on getting extra cash is through the use of an item shop. The item shop will have prestige item, mini pets and convenience items for sale, but nothing that will give anyone in the game an unfair advantage. For instance, you can buy cool sport sunglasses for your character for 200 gems or, if you love alts, you can buy an extra character slot for 800 gems.
Gems are purchased with real world cash (They can also be purchased from other players for in-world coin. Probably a lot of in-world coin.). So what’s a gem in real world currency?
Gems | 800 | 1600 | 2800 | 4000 |
---|---|---|---|---|
£ | 8.50 | 17.00 | 29.75 | 42.50 |
$ or € | 10.00 | 20.00 | 35.00 | 50.00 |

So the sunglasses will cost you $2.00 and another character slot will cost you $10.00.
