Guild Wars 2: Some old school names you can’t have

As we’ve mentioned, there’s just a little time left to reserve your Guild Wars 2 name in Guild Wars. You have until July 31st. After that the name reservation system is locked.

Unfortunately, most of the names from fantasy fiction appear to be locked up. You can count on all the Game of Thrones names being reserved, it seems, as mentioned in this post. And it’s looking like the old school fantasy names are gone, too.

All of the following names are reserved:

Gandalf the Grey
Gandalf the Gray
Gandalf the White
Bilbo Baggins
Frodo Baggins
Peregrin Took
Meriadoc Brandybuck
Samwise Gamgee

The good thing about Lord of the Rings is there are lots of one-word names, such as Strider or Legolas, and one-word names can’t be reserved in Guild Wars. So if you’re a Lord of the Rings fan and you’ve pre-ordered Guild Wars 2 (GW2), you probably have a good chance of getting a good Lord of the Rings name during the Headstart Access period, which starts on August 25. Just be sure to log as early as possible.

There’s not likely to be a lot of name hording in GW2 – where players take names and never play them – like you see in games that give you lots of character slots. Guild Wars 2 only gives you 5 character slots; if you want more slots, you’ll have to pay for them. Not too many people are going to buy more character slots just to horde names, so a lot of good names will probably be up for grabs.

And don’t forget, after August 28th all reservations are off. So some of those names reserved in Guild Wars might become available. If there’s a name you really want but it’s reserved, keep a character slot free and check, again, on the 29th.

See you, whatever your name is, in Guild Wars 2.
